Pixies in the Cybrarie!

Hey yo! Sean here with the shout out this morning. I’ve picked up my copy of The Destineers Journal of Fantasy Nations which is the required text for Professor Washington’s Mythical Beings class. I hear the Professor has a great post about Pixies over in the Cybrarie today. I can hardly wait to see what the little dude has ready for us. Ummm...please don't mention I called him a little dude. He's real sensitive about his height and being a goblin he doesn't think humans have any sensitivity anyway.

I'm glad he's posting about Pixies - may be that'll help me understand Merry a little better. Who's Merry? Merry Inch is a pixie who is a very good friend we met in the Netherscape. I've gotta say that little girl has spunk! She is a lot of fun, but she does tend to get into trouble a lot. Maybe that's why she and I get along so well... Anyway, she is really cute for someone of her, um, stature...I better shut up before I have all the wee folk on my case. Ow! Who? No fair hitting below the knee - Owwww!! Okay I think some of the leprauchans have infiltrated the blog, or maybe brownies, you rarely see them...owww! Leprachauns. Definitely leprachauns. Well, I don't want to be late for class - see you in the Cybrarie. Owwww, hey little dudes c'mon now! Did I mention I really like the wee folk?!?! C'mon you guys...!

Today's Mythical Being Lesson: The Phoenix

Today on Realms of Thought they are talking about favorite characters. In fantasy, these characters are not necessarily human.

Join us in the Cybrarie for Professor Washington’s Magical Beings class. Today's lesson is on phoenixes. If you want to follow along, open your copy of the text book The Destineers Journal of Fantasy Nations to page 119. Phoenixes are the most gorgeous creatures I have ever seen! Myrrh is the name of the phoenix we met in the Netherscape. He is very wise. Well, he is immortal, so I suppose he possesses the wisdom of the ages. He is extremely peace loving which is not easy in these troubled times and he has the keenest eyesight – he can see things that are happening miles away. Actually, Professor Washington says he can see all the way to the edge of the world.

Did you know a single Phoenix tear can cure any physical ailment a human might have? And their songs...oh, they are hauntingly beautiful. The song makes you feel totally at peace - with yourself and the world as a whole. It inspires you to feel like anything is possible. It fills you with hope.

We need a small bottle of phoenix tears for potions class this year…and a feather from a giant golden eagle. I’m betting the phoenix tears are to heal us after we try to get the eagle feather. Wonder what we’ll use the giant golden eagle feather for?!?

Percy Jackson Release

Hey yo, what's up?

Got to see the new Percy Jackson film recently and I was wondering how everyone else liked it?

I love Camp Halfblood - I could really get into a place like that to train for meeting up with fantastical beings. We kinda had to learn on the fly in the Netherscape, but it's all good. We also got to meet a lot of fantastical beings that weren't all trying to kill us, lol.

I know Professor Derrnz said the destineers all have strong magical roots, but dude, how cool is it to be a demigod?! Ya know?! Well, I gotta fly to get to Professor Washington's magical beings class...see ya at the Cybrarie!

Happy November Day to Pookas Everywhere!

Hey – yo – Sean here. Hope everyone had a great Halloween with lots of fun and candy. Gotta celebrate a day that you get candy! And caramel apples, they’re cool too!

Not sure how many of you are aware, but today is another very special day - November Day. I know, it doesn’t get much press, but check it out. It’s a day honoring the Pooka, a member of the fairy folk both respected and feared. Well, feared may be a little strong...Pookas may get a little carried away sometimes and carry a joke too far, but feared?! I dunno

Anyway, one of our good friends, Nissa, is a Pooka. He is amazing! He is a shapeshifter so you never know where he is going to turn up…or in what form! I’m not sure what his natural form really is (he is a member of the goblin family…a distant member if you ask Professor Washington! He doesn’t really have a lot of patience for Nissa’s practical jokes, and Nissa, loves a good practical joke – guess that’s why we’re such good friends!) Anyway, Nissa’s favorite form to assume is this little ball of cotton-candy pink fluff (about the size of a grapefruit) with iridescent wings, but he can shift into anything or anybody. He seems to find this humorous…but it really is a wicked cool talent to have! Anyway…certain traditions are associated with him like the Samhain, the harvest festival for bringing in the last of the crops, for instance.

The Pooka usually lives around mountains and hills, and there are stories of it appearing on November Day and providing prophecies and warnings to those who consult it.

So today, he should be on his best behavior since he is being honored….although yesterday he was complaining Hallmark doesn’t have a card for this particular occasion…yet. Somehow I think he’s trying to get that changed! Anyway, if you see Nissa around, make sure to wish him a Happy November Day; you’ll make his day!

Wild Things in the Cybrarie

Hi guys, Brady here! Today’s lesson in the Cybrarie should be amazing!! Professor Washington is lecturing on the Barbegazi and the Bogeyman today. They are on page 19 of our text book, The Destineers Journal of Fantasy Nations, if you want to read up on them. With the release of the fur covered edition of the children’s classic and upcoming movie based on the book, he’s keeping with the Wild Things theme.

I remember meeting some of the Barbegazi. They're on page 19 of They are a really cool branch of the gnome family – these gnomes live in the real snowy areas and dress all in white fur so they kinda look like miniature abominable snowmen – but they are protectors of nature and really kind of cool. They communicate through whistling – it sounds like the wind whistling if you don’t know the dialect…so some really snowy day if you hear what you think is the wind whistling…the Barbegazi may be closer than you think! Stop by the Cybrarie and check it out! Gotta run – the Professor hates it when you’re late for class! I’ll save ya a seat!

Virtual Holiday Cookout - Everyone's Invited!

I love holidays, don't you? Christmas is still my favorite, but Labor Day is definitely up there too, that means its almost time for classes to start up at school. Getting to see my friends and back to class. Why am I so excited about going back to class? You would too if your classes were magical like mine. You see, I'm Ryan, one of the Destineers. We go to Greenbrier Academy and our headmaster, Wiliam Derrnz has brought in some of the greatest teachers in the worlds for us - yes, I said worlds...Professor Noah Washington, our Mythical Beings teacher is a goblin from the Netherscape, after all.

Well, one last celebration before classes. We're heading over to the Cybrarie for one of our infamous cookouts - everyone is invited! We're bringing Firewing, the dragon hatchling to tend the bar-b-que...he's a natural and he loves cookouts. We have plenty of hot dogs and hamburgers and chicken and all the fixin's for s'mores too. Kylie is going to make some homemade ice cream - Firewing's other favorite food...marshmallows are his other favorite.

Almost Time for Cookin' Out with the Dragon!

“Hi – Brady here. Wow – I never in a million years thought I’d be saying this, but it’s GREAT to be back at the school!! I can hardly wait for classes to start up. I go to Greenbrier Academy. It’s a private school in Wen Melas, California. Last year we learned so much about the Fantasy Nations and about all the magic around us; it was really cool! It’s great to see all my friends – so far school has just had orientation and get to know the new kids kinds of activities but classes start next week after Labor Day. I can't wait to get back to dragon training class!”

“I’ve been hanging out with Professor Roardan – he seems glad to see my dragon, Firewing, but he seemed a little surprised he hadn’t gotten much bigger than the last time he saw him. Man, what does he expect, he’s just a hatchling! I thought I proved last year that size isn’t everything. Oh well, I’m 10 this year so I know he won’t be treating me like some little kid.”

“It’s almost Labor Day. I love holiday weekends – we always celebrate them with a virtual cookout over at the Cybrarie forum – hey – we’ve got a dragon that loves cookouts, may as well go for it! Firewing, in case you don’t know, is the dragon hatchling I found over in the Netherscape. I’ve had him since he was just an egg. My brother, Ryan, was really mad when he found out I had found the egg and was hiding it in my backpack. Ryan just turned 17 and sometimes he gets all protective of me and stuff. I think he thought the little guy’s mom would come looking for him or something, but we think something really bad happened to his mom. She must’ve been killed or she never would have left him. That stupid clan of Ares sen Feear went around killing any of the fantasy beings they could find. I’m pretty sure they’re the ones who killed her. Professor Roardan says it may have been giants or an Orc or something. He knows all about that kind of thing because he has a lot of family in Coldrone that are dragon riders – says it’s their family business – how cool is that?! Professor Roardan’s reaching me Dragonese so I can communicate with Firewing easier, but some of those growls are really hard to pronounce. The professor says I really need to work on my dialect – I’m not sure exactly what that means but I think it has something to do with pronunciation.”

“Well, I gotta go check in with all my teachers to see if there is anything special I am gonna need for their classes – I’m out of pixie dust…I bet I can get some this weekend. I’ll invite my pixie friend, Merry Inch, to the cookout. She has a crush on Sean you know. He's my brother's best frined and roommate at school. She thinks it’s a big secret that she likes him, but everybody knows. Girls. They’re so silly. Anyway, if you get a chance try to stop by the Cybrarie and join us for our virtual cookout this weekend – we bring the dragon, you bring whatever you’d like to have. If you’re thinking marshmallows or s’mores you might want to bring your own bag – Firewing really likes marshmallows!”

Feel the Magic

Hi! Glad you decided to pop on in!

Our Cybrarian, Millicent Prendergild, told us she was going to have them magic us a new blog look – I think she did a great job! What do you think?

Things are getting busy now with school getting ready to start on August 20. The professors have been working hard getting ready with new classes to post – both here and in the Cybrarie. The Professors will be posting lessons on Magical Beings – I have just re-read my copy of The Destineers’ Journal of Fantasy Nations for the 317th time. Hope you’ve been brushing up on your fantasy beings this summer for the Magical Beings calss! There’ll be other great classes too like The Magic’s in the Alchemy.

Another class that will be posting is Dragon Training – I know that’s all Brady has been able to talk about. He keeps trying to use his Dragonese on Firewing. He just kind of looks at him and smiles. This year’s gonna be great!

Breaking News: Destineers Website and Cybrarie Forum get Facelift

Hi! We've been busy preparing for the Carrollwood Day School's Authors Conference Day February 5 and can't wait to see everyone there!

We also thought we'd try to give the website (http://Destineers.com) and Cybrarie forum (http://Cybrarie.com) a bit of a facelift. We've reformatted the Cybrarie a bit, hopefully making it easier to navigate. We've divided the "rooms" into categories and added some new feature rooms, like classrooms for the teachers to post lectures from their various fantasy specialties, some writing prompts from Kylie and "Mad Libs" from Sean, and News and Upcoming events to be posted from across the realms. There will also be a resource center with lots of links to fantasy sites (soon to come), and a bookstore.

We hope you'll like the new changes! When you get a minute, stop by and let us know what you think - we're growing and loving it!

Happy Appreciate a Dragon Day

Today is national “Appreciate a Dragon Day”. Really. We’re pretty excited about it…having a dragon hatchling and all. If you get a chance, stop by the Cybrarie and say hi to Firewing, our resident dragon. He really likes it when friends stop by.

Yes, it’s the middle of winter, but we’re in southern California at our little castle house and the weather’s perfect today. Celebratin' with the Dragon

Hey! It's Brady and I gotta tell you - last night was soooo cool!


Last night Firewing stayed up to see how we celebrated the New Year. A lot of our neighbors were celebrating and had small parties going at their houses. We didn't go to any of their parties – we just had one of our own – you know, we try to keep the dragon out of sight of the neighbors.


Have I ever told you about our house and our street? We live in a small town in southern California called Pandora Cove. Don't bother trying to find it on the map, it's a small town and for some reason they just don't seem to ever put it on a stupid map. Anyway, our house is the greatest. It looks like a castle. Really. Well, maybe not as big as a real castle, but it's still pretty big and it's really cool. It's not like any of the other houses on our street that all look exactly alike. Matter of fact, we live on a cul- de-sac so Ry says the other houses are like pawns protecting the king (us) who live in the castle. I know. It's corny but it is kinda cool to think of it like that


Our house is huge (which is a good thing when you have a dragon…even if it is a miniature sized hatchling). Our back yard is really big too and there's no neighbors back there – just a little wooded area around the fringe of our yard – it's kinda like having our own private little forest. It's a great place to play hide and seek…you know, like when we were little kids.


Anyway, Sean and Kylie were visiting for the holidays and we were having our own little party in the family room – watching the TV specials, playing arcade games (Cosmic Kingdom of course), and having some fun when Firewing must've been looking out the windows and saw some of the neighbor kids running up and down the street with sparkers. He got all excited and started flaming his wings (sorry Mom, Sean had the fire extinguisher handy so the tile only got a little singed – I'll scrub it today and make it shine I promise – there wasn't any real damage, I swear!) Out in the backyard Firewing was running around and puffing out little flame shapes – kinda like some people can blow smoke rings - we found out he can blow different shaped flames. It was pretty cool. But, he was excited and started flaming his wings and before we knew it he was flying and making all kinds of shapes and pictures with the flames in the sky – his own version of fireworks. It was GREAT!!


We did get a little nervous when the neighbors started coming over to find out what kind of fireworks we had. Ry talked to the neighbors while I told Firewing in Dragonese to quit flaming!! (I hope my voice changes soon so I can make those low growly sounds in Dragonese better – at least Firewing can understand me!) Anyway, we had to make Firewing come down and hide with me in the forest and stay still and be really quiet so the neighbors don't find him. Mom says we're not zoned for dragons in our neighborhood. Ry just told the neighbors that we found some special fireworks when we were away – didn't get them locally…well, it's not exactly a lie, we found Firewing in the Netherscape, that's not exactly local.


Anyway, the New Year is off to a great start! We had a blast celebrating – how about you?

A Dragon's Christmas Tale

‘Twas the night before Christmas, the old story goes
The year Rudolph was sick with a cold in his nose.
His eyes were all itchy and watery too
He coughed and he sneezed a resounding A-CHOOOO!!

The poor little deer couldn’t lift up his head
How could he possibly fly - and pull that big sled?
His coughs and his sneezes just wouldn’t do
They started an avalanche - burying sleigh and toys too!

Santa thought and he thought then he called an old friend
Dr. Doolittle came running – couldn’t let Christmas end!
Doc spoke to the elf while shaking his head
“That is one sick little deer that must stay in bed.”

So Santa met with his wisest of elves
They debated and planned and said to themselves
“The fog is so thick, how do you suppose
We will ever get through with no shiny red nose?”

“There must be someone who can help us out
But who can it be?” The elves started to pout.
The littlest elf quietly started to sing
“I know of someone. His name’s Firewing.”

“He’s the smallest of dragons from the legends of old
But he’s kind and he’s loving, has a heart made of gold.
With a puff he can breathe fire on high
He has fire enough to light up the sky.”

“This tiny dragon has a talent so rare
He can make his wings flame while flying on air.
With Firewing’s help for the good girls and boys
Santa can get through with his sleigh full of toys.”

The reindeer looked nervous and pawed at the ground
A dragon? For real? THIS was the replacement they found?
The puzzled old elf asked “what’s the matter with you?”
Then Comet cried out “Santa, my friend, we love Christmas too.”

“BUT…a dragon?! For real?! What are you thinking?
He’s a dragon! He’ll gobble us up without even blinking.
We don’t want to end up flambéed as a venison roast,
Not a nice reindeer stew, to eat with some toast!”

The jolly old elf chuckled and said “My dear little friends do not dismay -
Dragons are just like you, they eat oats and some hay,
An occasional apple maybe a carrot or two
But NEVER my friends do they eat venison stew.”

They were still unconvinced so Santa said one thing more
“Dragons do have one weakness, a treat they adore.
They have quite a sweet tooth, and can’t get enough
Marshmallows my friends; and marshmallow fluff!”

“Marshmallows?” asked Comet “I hear they’re quite good,
The humans like to toast them over a flame made with wood.”
“Yes,” agreed Santa, “And Firewing is a friend
Who will toast them for you over and over again!”

So off they all flew that one Christmas night
Delivering presents by Firewing’s light.
They laughed and they partied and had quite a time
With roasted marshmallows and friends, it was quite sublime.

So early next morning Firewing crawled into bed
While visions of reindeer friends danced in his head.
He dreamt of the night with his new found friends
They saved Christmas for all, so it wouldn’t end.

But later that morning he wasn’t quite sure
When his young friend Brady eagerly bounced through his door
Had it been real or a wonderful dream?
His head was all fuzzy like…marshmallow cream.

“Come on down, Santa’s been here
I’ll tell you the story of the elf and reindeer.”
Brady babbled excitedly of the well known tale
How they delivered presents and made that sleigh sail

“He’s left us all presents – the best that could be
Some books are for Kylie, Dragonese tapes for me.
Ryan got a sword to decorate his room,
Sean got a boom box with extra loud boom.”

“But, you got the very best gift of them all.
Come see for yourself” Brady continued to call
A most perfect present, please hurry and see
Your very own fantasy – a Marshmallow tree!”

“It’s loaded with marshmallows and does a great trick
When you pick a marshmallow off, one grows back real quick.
It comes with a note from Santa” he raved
“Heartfelt thanks go to Firewing – for Christmas he saved.”

“What does he mean?” Brady wanted to know
But the dragon just winked and ate a marshmallow.
“Presents are nice – but not the real reason
We celebrate and love this wonderful season.”

“Christmas is more than just presents and toys -
Its working together to spread love and joy.
The best part of Christmas is the feeling you know
From sharing the love wherever you go.”

He ate one more marshmallow then started to fly
His message emblazed across a clear sky
“Happy Christmas to all – go spread love and good cheer
Be kind to others – throughout the whole year.”

Book Review:

Dragons Are Sooo Cool!!!

Dragons are sooo cool. One of my classes at Greenbrier this year was dragon training. We haven’t really worked with the live dragons yet. I’m still workin’ on learning Dragonese. It’s a really a cool language but some of those low growls are really hard for my voice. Professor Roardan says they can still understand me, but it’s harder. They have to really pay attention. Ever try to get a dragon to pay attention? Not easy. Really short attention spans unless they are hunting for food or after treasure to add to the horde. The Professor says they are very focused then. I guess it’s kinda like when somebody talks with a really strong accent, like maybe they are from another part of the country or English isn’t their main language and the accent is a little different than you are used to – you can still understand them, you just have to listen harder and pay attention. Same with the dragons. Dialect. That’s what Professor Roardan calls it. Anyway, the Dragonese lessons have helped me a lot already. You see, I found a dragon egg when we were in the Netherscape.

My dragon hatchling is so cute – his name is Firewing cause when he gets excited, well, his wings kinda have this flame fringe. Yeah, about that…he kinda gets excited a lot. I don’t know if he’ll outgrow it when he gets a little older or not. I hope not. It looks really cool. You know, my friend J, Vampire Hunter over on MySpace was blogging about superheroes. Who knows, maybe my dragon has this as a special power or something, you know, like a dragon superhero. How cool would that be?! He’d be kinda like The Torch. Flame on! A dragon superhero would be cool. Bad guys don’t mess with dragons. Well, the Clan of Ares sen Feear tried…they thought they had killed all the dragons in their Realm. Boy, were they surprised to see Firewing!

Professor Roardan said he’s never heard of a dragon’s wings flaming like Firewing’s, and his family has been dragon riders in the Realm of the Coldrone since like his great, great, great, I don’t know, I think it was like five or six great grandfather’s ago. He’s going to ask his grandfather if he’s ever heard of flaming wings before. The Professor even said he might take me to Scotland to meet his grandfather and talk to him about being a rider! That’s where Professor Roardan’s family lives since they came to our world a couple generations ago. I can’t wait till I can ride a dragon. I can’t imagine anything cooler, can you?

Hey Y'all, S'up?!

Hey y'all, s'up?! I'm Sean.

Summer is here. We've gotten back from the Netherscape and settled back into our lives in our own world. Don't know 'bout you guys, but I've been spendin' my time chillin' by the family pool with a nice tall glass of Mom's ice cold homemade lemonade. I'm just enjoyin' the summer break kickin' back, takin' it easy and watchin' the skies for a cloudwalker or two that might just wander into our world.

There's a holiday weekend comin' so I'll probably head over to the Destineers new website and hang (Destineers.com). I'm pretty sure they'll break out the dragon and fire up the ole bar-b-q.... I know Brady snuck that dragon back here. Gotta admit, they look kinda cute together, those two are inseparable kinda like…what's that old TV show? You know the one, with that little kid Timmy and his dog Lassie… Of course that kid didn't have to worry about carryin' a fire extinguisher around with him.
